The Slender Thread (1965 Sidney Pollack)

Pollack's feature debut is a nifty little thriller in which student Sidney Poitier picks up a call from a suicide who's already taken the overdose - Anne Bancroft. He has to stay on the line long enough to track down where she is and save her. In the meantime, she relates what has led up to this. Written by Stirling Silliphant.

The one argument Poitier doesn't use is that if she dies she'll leave her ten year old son with no mother, which is a bit of a let-down.

Distinctive music by Quincy Jones, photographed by Loyal Griggs. It takes place in Seattle.

With Telly Savalas. Steven Hill (the husband), Edward Asner (the detective).

Bancroft was with Mel Brooks already - they married the previous year and were together until her death in 2005.
