Leave the World Behind (2023 Sam Esmail & scr, prod)

Had Q not reminded me we'd watched this, I may never have reviewed it, so completely had it slipped from my mind.

This was finally why Julia Roberts was on Graham Norton?

'America is in real trouble' is the not at all subtle message of this picture, in which a vacationing NYC family in Long Island find the world's falling apart all around them. To reinforce this, Esmail likes twisting his camera into ridiculous positions. The music is quite over the top, I quite liked it (Mac Quayle, also Feud). The stuff about animal migration patterns having been disrupted is just so much nonsense, as is boy pulling his teeth out. Roberts and Ali make friends ridiculously quickly etc.

I liked two things: the driverless vehicles all smashing into themselves, and the very ending, in which the daughter Farrah Mackenzie finds - of all things - the long-awaited last episode of Friends on good old hard copy.

Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke, Myha'la, Charlie Evans. Kevin Bacon.

For Netflix.
