Thankfully the MoMA had a couple of 35mm prints which were restored and Criterion has released them anew, as the previous copies were atrocious. See previous jottings - the restored version at 88 minutes is three minutes longer, too.
It's a very beautiful film, so elegantly done. Irene Dunne is just fabulous in it - it's her best performance (it was one of her five Oscar nominations). Her scene with grandmother Maria Ouspenskaya is marvellous.
Rudolph Maté photographed it at RKO.
