Based on Nora Ephron's novel, which told of the affair - whilst pregnant - between her husband Carl Bernstein (one of the Washington Post Nixon investigators) and the wife of the British Ambassador.
Have to love the moment of Nicholson singing a Broadway musical tune. Also two bored waiters at the wedding who are discussing cooking whilst imbibing the Cristal.
The house never does get finished (Tony Walton production designer). Photographed by Nestor Almendros. The Carly Simon track is unfortunately well over-used.
Meryl Streep, Jack Nicholson, Jeff Daniels, Maureen Stapleton, Stockard Channing, Richard Masur, Milos Forman - and small parts for Kevin Spacey and Mercedes Ruehl. Nichols - the actors' director - doesn't like to cut but prefers long takes.
"This robbery wasn't your fault."
"This robbery was my fault."
"I know."
Good stuff: birth scenes, cooking, therapy. Not sentimental, moves along well.
