Adapted from HG Wells novel which he'd always liked, produced by John Mills for Two Cities. He's good, talking to himself, uttering 'small dog!', attempting to read the paper whilst ignoring his fishwife and trying not to get hurt by bully Finlay Currie, whilst making a fool of himself with the ladies, notably Sally Anne Howes (as a devious schoolgirl) and Betty Ann Davies.
"Strangely enough, out of the 102 films that I've made The History of Mr Polly is the one I'm most proud of". ('Up in the Clouds Gentlemen Please'.) It was not a great success with the public, however.
With Gladys Henson, Megs Jenkins, Edward Chapman, Juliet Mills, Miles Malleson and Irene Handl.
Music by William Alwyn, photographed by Desmond Dickinson, edited by John Seabourne (with Anne Coates uncredited assistant). Shot on sets at Denham.
Ant and Johnny's next film was The Rocking Horse Winner...
