Endeavour: Uniform (2023 Nirpal Bhogal, writer Russell Lewis)

My, Lewis keeps a lot going on. There's so much sub-text in this - or is it meta-text? - about actors and TV shows - a series of novels turned into a hit TV series that's being cancelled... Sound familiar? With plenty of subliminal jokes about actors, often voiced to Morse and Thursday.

There's also what we could take as a reference to Thursday's death right at the beginning (so it's either a forewarning or Lewis is playing with the audience), and a very clear Clockwork Orange influenced story line.

But it's all about Blenheim Vale and people in power pulling strings. Bodies are uncovered, Morse is assaulted by City police, Ronnie Box has discovered something so big he's almost killed, and does a runner, warning Thursday that if he proceeds, he's a dead man...

Morse misses a meeting with Joan, who's clearly having second thoughts about marrying Strange (we get a feel for how dull their evening dinner conversation is going to be).

There's a real feeling of tragedy and impending doom.

With Kevin McNally, Leo Starr, Richard Hope, Bill Skinner, Todd Bell.

Usual good behind-the-camera contributions from Matthew Slater (music), Adam Lyons (cinematography), Tom Henson-Webb (editing), Madelaine Leech (production designer).
