Marvellously entertaining send-off for Alan Arkin, who died on Thursday (89). He's the most cynical of the three pensioners who decide to rob a bank and get their pension back. The others are Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman - three Oscar winners (Arkin's for Little Miss Sunshine), all with very distinctive voices.
Arkin was a singer (that is him duetting with Ann Margaret) and composer but I'm not sure he was a sax player (with reference to celebration scene).
Wittily written by Theodore Melfi (loved the very polite bank robbers), based on a story by Edward Cannon. We did notice the Scooby Doo van as a possible getaway vehicle.
With Ann Margaret, Matt Dillon, Joey King (Caine's grand daughter - good dialogue between these two), Christopher Lloyd, John Ortiz, Peter Serafinowicz.
Shot by Rodney Charters, edited by Myron Kerstein, music Rob Simonsen.
The split screen is used rather well, for a change |
