The Last Shot (2004 Jeff Nathanson & scr)

Based on an article 'What's Wrong with This Picture?' by Steve Fishman, which doesn't appear online, and therefore may not exist, which purports to explore the case of two would-be filmmakers who unwittingly were exposed to the mob in an FBI sting operation. In Nathanson's version, it's an FBI operative himself Alec Baldwin who starts to believe in his own undercover role as a producer for wannabe Matthew Broderick's film script, 'Arizona', and idea about a woman with cancer who finds herself in the desert.

(Went down a rabbit hole there about the WGA Writers' strike and the Screen Actors Guild (SAF-AFTA) coming out with them. Interesting times for Hollywood.)

Er. It's funny we watch this in the middle of Get Shorty Season One, which is also about non-professionals deciding they can make films. This is funny as the FBI gets into the swing of things ("The Federal Bureau of Investigation would like to make a three picture deal", the observation cameraman wants to be the DP, etc.) and a diva (Toni Collette in fun performance) joins the cast of non-existent film.

Colette I feel throws herself into everything; whatever the role she gives it her all. Broderick I'm not so sure, does he seem the same in everything? Baldwin has a sly style all his own.

With Calista Flockhart, Tim Blake Nelson, Tony Shaloub, Buck Henry, Ray Liotta. Music Rolfe Kent, DP John Lindley, Editor David Rosenbloom.
