It's written by Dan Fogleman - of course it is. Thus the clever plotting and misdirection. I was thinking about it in plot terms - very interesting, as it starts out with everyone being rejected - Steve Carrell by his wife Julianne Moore, Jonah Bobo by babysitter Analeigh Tipton, she by Carell, and Ryan Gosling by Emma Stone. This then sets up the framework for everything to come.
According to Entertainment Weekly they did the Dirty Dancing move for real, but that's not the story that Emma told on Graham Norton. At school she had fallen from six foot parallel bars and broken both arms. So when the time came to rush at Ryan, she totally freaked out and had a meltdown (and had to watch Labyrinth in bed!) They used doubles. So don't trust EW.
