The Imitation Game (2014 Morten Tyldum)

A terrific screenplay by Graham Moore (based on 'Alan Turing The Enigma' by Andrew Hodges) artfully cross cuts between wartime Bletchley, the 1950s and school days at Sherborne, makes the dull work of code-breaking exciting, fills in Turing the man and his dreadful fate. Moore won the Oscar but Birdman and Eddie Redmayne scooped the major awards.

Great cast of Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Mark Strong, Matthew Goode, Rory Kinnear, Charles Dance. With Allen Leech (from Downton), Matthew Beard (And When Did You Last See Your Father?, An Education), James Northcote, Tom Goodman Hill, Alex Lawther (good as young Turing, Goodbye Christoper Robin), Jack Bannon (school friend Christopher), Tuppence Middleton.

I can tell you that like all great films is was well edited, by William Goldenberg. Photographed by Oscar Faura and with a suitably tinkly score from Alexandre Desplat to underscore mathematics and mechanics. Production design by Maria Djurkovic (Tinker Tailor, The Dig, The Little Drummer Girl).
