The Martian (2015 Ridley Scott)

A film all about ingenuity - problem-solving and science (though it did occur to me that if they had been told immediately they could have turned around and gone back much quicker). Matt Damon becomes the American role model - he's educated, brainy, hands-on, not above getting into disco music, resourceful and brave. Film is long but not over. There are rather a lot of people who come and go. Kristen Wiig's character needn't have been in it.

Jeff Daniels in rare stern form, good. Jessica Chastain, Michael Pena, Kate Mara (Rooney's sister, we might have recognised her from 4 episodes of Entourage), Sean Bean, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong (The Wrong Mans, Kick-Ass 2, Top Boy, State of Play) and Donald Glover.

Shot in Jordan by Dariusz Wolski. Great sound, editing (Pietro Scalia).

Also didn't believe a bit of plastic would seal the hole.

Film started me thinking of Silent Running and Michael Moorcock's 'The Black Corridor', though it didn't go in either direction.
