Blow Up (1966 Michaelangelo Antonioni & co-scr)

A determinedly sixties bunch loon around The Economist Plaza and St James' Street, where Rolls Royce convertible driving photographer David Hemmings zooms into view. Thereafter we are treated to some good sights of London from the moving vehicle, particularly Fulham, populated by carefully chosen people and colours.

Hemmings is an arrogant fuck. He photographs a girl in a park, who doesn't like it so much she later takes off her shirt, then thinks he has witnessed a murder.

In keeping with Antonioni's mood of alienation and enigma, I chose not to watch the last twenty minutes. I think he would have approved. Or maybe he wouldn't.

Photographed by Carlo di Palma, music by Herbie Hancock.

With: Vanessa Redgrave, Sarah Miles, John Castle, Jane Birkin & Gillian Hills, Peter Bowles, Veruschka von Lehndorff and Susan Brodrick (below).

The rather good photographs featured were taken by Don McCullin.
