Whirlpool (1949 Otto Preminger)

Gene Tierney and David Raksin reunited from Laura, neither making as much impact. Gene's a kleptomaniac who is helped out by dodgy analyst Jose Ferrer (rather good), who sets her up for a murder. Meanwhile her husband Richard Conte starts to believe she's having an affair, whilst Charles Bickford, recently widowed, investigates.

Ben Hecht was no doubt commissioned on the back of his Spellbound-psychiatry success, from Guy Endore's novel. Photographed by Arthur Miller.

For Fox. Enjoyable. BFI's print is lovely.
