Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011 Stephen Daldry)

Max Von Sydow died March 8, aged 90. A terrific actor, he helps fill the screen when Hanks is gone, giving a performance of warmth and intelligence without speaking a single word. He was Oscar-nominated (Christopher Plummer in Beginners won).

A young man (Thomas Horn) with borderline Asperger's struggles to cope with his father dying in 9/11, goes on a journey of discovery, meeting such types as Viola Davis and Jeffrey Wright. Meanwhile his mum Sandra Bullock is watching over him, covertly.

Written by Eric Roth, from Jonathan Safran Foer novel. It's beautifully shot and edited (Chris Menges and Claire Simpson) but there's something about this film that doesn't click for me. It's not a great title either. Liked the stuff with oxymorons, however.

Claire's best moment - a fade after the swings scene in which the portion of film containing Hanks and Horn stays on the screen a bit longer than the rest of the image.
