Designing Woman (1957 Vincente Minnelli)

The difficulties experienced by newly married designer Lauren Bacall and sports writer Gregory Peck, complicated when he doesn't wish to reveal his former relationship with actress Dolores Gray (why?) Fun support in shape of newspaper editor Sam Levene, punchy boxer Mickey Shaugnessy and annoying dancer Alvy Moore, who comes into his own in final punch-out with crooks. An annoying poodle also features.

It's definitely a film which warms up as it goes along. It's not a great part for Bacall, as her character is a bit wet. (Bogey was dying at the time.)

The moment Bacall realises that Gray is the photo in Peck's flat - three increasingly closer shots of her face edited together rapidly - is quite innovative.

With Tom Hellmore (Vertigo), Jesse White, Chuck Connors, Edward Platt. Shot by John Alton in Metrocolor and CinemaScope, music by André Previn. MGM. The MGM lion depicted is the rarely seen George.
