The Scarlet Claw (1944 Roy William Neill & co-scr, prod)

This one - 'the best of the series' according to Maltin - I would say Face of Death or Pearl of Death might be a runner - is set in Canadian foggy marshes, for a change, and features a throat slashing piece of garden equipment and a phosphorescent ghost, photographed by George Robinson.

On hand this time are Gerald Hamer, Paul Cavanagh, Arthur Hohl, Miles Mander (judge), Kay Harding, David Clyde, Ian Wolfe (Witness for the Prosecution).

Bruce falling into a pit is the height of the comedy.

No idea which Conan Doyle story has been evoked. Screenwritten by the director and Edmund Hartmann from a story by Paul Gangelin and Brenda Weisberg.

Universal casting: 'We're looking for oo-arr village types'.
