Sherlock Holmes Faces Death (1943 Roy William Neill)

An old family house in Northumberland is being used as a convalescent home for recovering officers, who add a certain quirky flavour to the proceedings (without necessarily being very medically sound). A murder of one of the family owners occurs, and resident doctor Watson calls in his mate Sherlock Holmes, thus both of them miss breakfast.

Takes its main idea from Conan Doyle's 'The Musgrave Ritual', though the chess variation on the puzzle is an innovation from writer Bertram Millhauser. An atmospheric episode, photographed by Charles Van Enger, who started silent, shot Lubitsch's The Marriage Circle and Forbidden Paradise, for example, was then relegated to countless B movies and TV.

With Arthur Margetson, Hillary Brooke, Halliwell Hobbes, Dennis Hoey, Minna Phillips, Vernon Dowling.
