It's 1971 and there's a postal strike - how little things have changed! Morse is clearly suffering from the events of the Venice episode (or according to Q 'Death In Venice'), drinking heavily and arriving late. He's naturally overjoyed to be tasked with babysitting a footballer who's received a death threat, Julian Moore-Cook.
There's a real current of sadness that runs through these, particularly because of the Morse-Joan backstory.
Filmed partly at the Coppid Beech Hotel in Bracknell.
The 'Angry Brigade' and the IRA are out there bombing things and Eamonn Andrews 'isn't as tall as he looks on the television'.
