خانه دوست کجاست / Where Is the Friend's House? (1987 Abbas Kiarostami & scr)

In essence a comedy-drama, about a boy in an Iranian village who has to get his friend's school exercise book to him, or he'll be expelled. But he doesn't know where he lives - just in the next village. The boy finds that absolutely no one will listen to him - when he explains the predicament to his mother (who's too busy making him do things) she just says 'Do your homework'. When he finds a man who may know where the boy lives, he won't listen, and the boy has to chase him - the chase scene that follows of a boy pursuing a fat man on a donkey in a hurry is both funny and tense. Will he find him? It gets late, and finally an old, garrulous man guides him to the right house. Then at the last minute, he doesn't knock on the door. Why not?? By then it's dark - how he finds his way back home isn't shown. The ending - in class next day - is really tense. And beautiful.

Babak Ahmadpour is great as the boy who is surrounded by a blank wall of irritating characters. With Ahmed Ahmadpour, Khodabaksh Defair, Iran Outari.

My first Persian film is very good indeed.
