Marvin's Room (1996 Jerry Zaks)

Superb cast in Scott McPherson's adaptation of his own play. (He sadly died of AIDS before the play premiered.) Dysfunctional mother Meryl Streep must take two sons - Leonardo Di Caprio and Hal Scardino - to long estranged sister Diane Keaton in Florida, and her mum and dad Gwen Verdon and Hume Cronyn. Doctor and brother Robert de Niro and Dan Hedaya provide chuckles, though more were filmed but subsequently cut following previews. A shame, as de Niro's good in parts like these.

Jim Clark was the editor (Mark Livolsi an assistant), and relates that theatre director Zaks' first time on a film was closely controlled by producer Scott Rudin creating an unhappy set, and that de Niro never rehearsed his lines. Conrad Hall came in to shoot some of the retakes, e.g. shouting match between Streep and Keaton. Piotr Sobocinski did the principal photography.

Keaton's great - much better than the shit she chooses to act in nowadays.
