Written by Spielberg and Tony Kushner, the film is as much about his mum's depression and infidelity than his film-maker's journey, and thus widely steers around hints to the future (you know, trucks, sharks, flying saucers etc.)
Michelle Williams and Paul Dano are parents to the Fabelmans of which Gabriel LaBelle is the oldest child and the film student. Seth Rogan is the family friend, Judd Hirsch in small part as an Uncle, Jeannie Berlin (not her mum Elaine May!) an aunt.
Typically well shot, scored and edited by Spielberg regulars Kaminski, Williams and Khan (with Sarah Broshar). Production design Rick Carter.
My favourite moment - the gliding shopping trollies. And final bit with John Ford (an unrecognisable David Lynch!)
It's very enjoyable but not quite the great film it perhaps could have been, on first viewing, anyway. Well acted.
