The Rose (1979 Mark Rydell)

We needed more Bette - she's fabulous in this, was BAFTA and Oscar nominated (and won a Golden Globe). Rydell likes keeping the acting (and indeed some of the musical performances) in long takes, though Alan Bates seems oddly ill at ease in his role as her manager.

Bill Kirby / Bo Goldman script catches well the opposite forces of the allure of the audience (no matter what size) and the desperate wish just to take a break.

With Fredric Forrest, Harry Dean Stanton, Barry Primus again!

There he is!

Gorgeously shot by Vilmos Zsigmond in  a way no one does any more. I was marvelling at the way he and/or his operator were closing in on Bette in performance, getting closer, coming out again, just enough to catch her as big as possible, not too close to compromise the image...
