Driving Miss Daisy (1989 Bruce Beresford)

Written and based on his own play by Alfred Uhry, based on his grandmother and her chauffeur, spanning from 1940s Georgia into old age. Hans Zimmer reused his own theme from this in The Holiday

Love Morgan Freeman's laugh in this. He played it first on stage. He's early fifties here. Good makeup - Manlio Rocchetti, Lynn Barber, Kevin Haney won Oscar, as did Film, Screenplay and Jessica Tandy. (Freeman was nominated, won for Million Dollar Baby).

With Dan Aykroyd, Patti LuPone, Esther Rolle. Photographed by Peter James.

I was interested to read that Poitier turned down the role as he didn't want to be seen in servitude (as well as Shawshank as didn't think it helpful as a role model to be playing a convict) and great though Poitier undeniably was, I can't see him in either role.
