Fixed Bayonets! (1951 Sam Fuller & scr)

Another tough and immediate Fuller picture, about a platoon in snowy Korea that needs to hold their position while the rest of the regiment regroups. Incisive editing (Nick DeMaggio) and a lack of familiar faces are assets.

Remarkable moments - the theft of an enemy bugle to confuse them with their own call, a man carrying what turns out to be a corpse through a minefield, and the terrifying moment where one group is radioing another, but we see a Korean at the other end of the radio, the American soldiers all dead.

Richard Basehart is the Corporal who has trouble killing, Gene Evans the tough sergeant, Michael O'Shea, Richard Hylton, Craig Hill, Skip Homeier.

Photographed by Lucien Ballard. Suggested by a novel by John Brophy. Filmed on sets at 20th Century Fox. Tough, claustrophobic, cynical.
