One of the few later WAs to be co-written, with Douglas McGrath. (He wrote the Gwyneth Paltrow Emma. More on this later.)
Absolutely gorgeously shot in dark opulence by Carlo di Palma. (Our DVD is a bit soft but so are most prints, apparently.) Designed by Santo Loquasto.
An absolutely terrific film with a brilliant central idea, typified by many long takes allowing great acting to flourish. Diane Wiest is a joy in Oscar-winning performance (sort of derived from Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard?)
John Cusack, Jennifer Tilly, Chazz Palminteri, Mary Louise-Parker, Jack Warden, Joe Viterelli, Rob Reiner, Tracey Ullman, Jim Broadbent, Harvey Fierstein.. and Edie Falco, Debi Mazar and Tony Sirico.
It's also all about the creative process, trying to get something made.
It's sometimes overwhelmingly tempting to just add all of Woody's films into my top 200. Bergman can fuck off.
