Double Indemnity (1944 Billy Wilder)

Not much more to add, other than the Austrian immigrant's handling of the English language is superb. Written with Raymond Chandler.

"That was a highly intelligent actress, Miss Stanwyck. I questioned the wig, but it was proper because it was a phony wig.. She was just an extraordinary woman. She took the script, loved it, right from the word go... And she knew the script, everybody's lines..Never a fault, never a mistake - just a wonderful brain she had."

[on MacMurray] "I can't do that." And I said "Why can't you?" He said "It requires acting!" George Raft considered it, but thought he'd be an FBI man, not an actual murderer.

Both quoted from the invaluable 'Conversations with Wilder', one of the best books ever, which my wife has still never read...
