Destry Rides Again (1939 George Marshall)

The director wisely keep things in long takes. Jimmy Stewart is superb as easy-going but committed new sheriff in town, determined to keep law and order without a gun, unlike his dad. According to Peter's book, an early lunch has to be called one day during a scene between he and Marlene, as he was getting visibly  'excited'.

You have to give credit to Charles Winninger for a fully committed and funny performance as the formerly boozed up sheriff. But also to Mischa Auer as pantless buffoon. And to Dietrich, who gives it her all. And to Una Merkel...

It's particularly beautifully shot by Hal Mohr. He and Dietrich got on well. He knew she knew a bit about lighting from Josef von Sternberg, and when she brought him an idea or two, he said 'Go on then - you light the set'. And she lit a few lights and then said 'Yeah - OK.' (It's harder than it looks.)

A Universal production. One of five films released with Stewart that year (one being Mr Smith Goes to Washington).
