When Eight Bells Toll (1971 Etienne Perier)

Alastair Maclean adapted his own novel, which is about missing bullion ships, and intrigue on the Isle of Mull. It's sort of in the Bond mode (the score is a sub-Barry copy) but less globe-trotting and more focused. Naval expert and anti-authoritarian Anthony Hopkins is brought in by food-obsessed Robert Morley to help sort out what's going on, with his old mate Corin Redgrave. Runs across Jack Hawkins (dubbed; he lost his voice in 1966), Nathalie Delon (previously married to Alain), Derek Bond, useful fisherman Ferdy Mayne, helicopter pilot Maurice Roeves. Talking of which, the machine gunning and crash of the helicopter into the sea with Hopkins and Roeves on board is the most exciting scene. Good underwater stuff and photography (DP was Arthur Ibbetson).

Mull (Tobermory) setting unusual, plotting quite interesting, acting fine.
