Secondhand Lions (2003 Tim McCanlies & scr)

I don't know quite how we hadn't encountered this delightful film before, which with its tall tales of derring-do in Africa reminded me of the spirits of The Princess Bride and Big Fish.

Haley Joel Osment is abandoned by his feckless mother Kyra Sedgwick and left in the care of eccentric uncles Michael Caine and Robert Duvall (both fabulous). McCanlies' script is very funny and sweet.

Photographed by Jack Green, music by Patrick Doyle, edited by David Moritz. McCanlies co-wrote The Iron Giant.
