The Martian (2015 Ridley Scott)

We thought this was Ridley Scott's best film (we're not really fans). Thank writers Drew Goddard and Andrew Weir, who wrote the novel on which it was based (he grew up a science fiction fan). It's pretty believable.

There's another 2001 reference in it. It was appropriate that we watched the other half of Good Will Hunting on the same day.

It's films like this you really notice the sound design (Oliver Tarney). Sound gets Oscars - why aren't they credited up front like the others?

Good cast. Matt Damon, Jeff Daniels. Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig (who I misidentified as Sarah Paulson - where is Sarah Paulson?), Michael Peña, Sean Bean, Kate Mara, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mackenzie Davis, Donald Glover (who should be there at the finale - it was his idea, after all).

Photographed in Jordan, and at Korda Studios outside Budapest, by Dariusz Wolski and edited by Pietro Scalia.

That's definitely a stand-in playing 'thin' Matt.

Long and exhausting but good and gripping - the best space movie after Gravity. Disco songs on soundtrack are entirely appropriate.
